Burns' home, upon leaving Shelby County, was in Harris County, and she later lived in Galveston with a grand-daughter, Mrs. Burns was a veteran of the Civil and Mexican Wars. The family settled in Shelby County and it was there that her marriage to John Burns took place. She came from Tennessee to Texas when 8 years old.
